While phosphorus run off receives greater attention as an element negatively impacting lakes, road salt also poses a threat to the health of lakes. Though road salt from street run off drains to separate storm waters systems, some salt nevertheless finds pathways into area lakes. Of course the absence of of salt on winter roads would create a significant safety hazard, judicious and targeted use of the element is a common sense practice.
