The DNR regulates the application of chemical treatment for aquatic vegetation statewide. In the case of Lake Owasso, the DNR allowance is up to 100′ or 50% of owned shoreline, whichever is less. e.g. if you own 80′, the maximum allowed treatment is 40′. If your lot is less than 70′ you are allowed up to 35 feet of treatment. Also, in the case of Lake Owasso, the DNR allows between 10-15 acres of treatment in certain central areas of the lake. This allowance is largely allocated toward the south bay, which normally experiences dense patches of Curly Leaf Pond Weed and Eurasian Water Milfoil. Know that Lily Pads are a protected species where the DNR only grants permits for this plant to accommodate a 15-foot-wide channel to enable lake access. Further, commercial applicators are registered with and are routinely audited by the DNR.
For properties with recurring annual treatment, the permit process with the DNR is more streamlined. However, if a property changes ownership or if a property has a lapse in recurring treatment, the DNR will typically add additional permit requirements (e.g. on-site inspections) for such properties.
